Sharma the secret hero of Sunrisers’ win

Amid the big-hitting exploits of Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson, Sandeep Sharma played a key role in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s win.

Just a few days shy of his 25th birthday, right-arm medium-pace bowler Sharma played an important part in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s emphatic win over the Delhi Daredevils. Sharma has only two T20Is under his belt but has been impressive in his 89-match T20 career to date that has seen him pick up 104 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.36. Sharma also had a hand in two run-outs on the night.

What was noticeable about Sharma’s performance was the fact that he managed to keep a tight reign on Pant in particular and, overall, helped to throttle the DD batsmen to keep his personal economy rate down to 6.00 in the innings. Although this is only ranked as the 93rd most economical performance by a bowler in this year’s IPL, in the context of the match (and Pant’s great innings) it was a truly terrific bowling performance.

Sandeep Sharma: bowling to Rishabh Pant in Delhi on 10 May 2018

Sharma to Pant | 1 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 1 – 4 – 1

Pant’s innings of 128 off 63 balls came at a strike rate of 203.17… but Sharma throttled the DD batsman, restricting him to seven runs off the nine balls he bowled to him. Pant’s strike rate off Sharma? A miserly 77.77. Advantage Sharma!
