Pakistan regroup to reach tea on 177-3

Solid batting by Shan Masood and Asad Shafiq after lunch helped Pakistan to match their first innings score on day three of the second Test in Cape Town, writes SIMON LEWIS

The pair added 132 for the third wicket in an excellent session for the visitors as they soaked up the pressure from the Proteas pacemen on a windy Cape Town day that offered a lot less than the previous two days in terms of bounce and movement.

Dale Steyn got the breakthrough, inducing the edge from Masood, Quinton de Kock taking the catch safely. Masood’s 61 came off 110 balls with nine fours.

Babar Azam joined Shafiq and added a breezy 16 off 10 balls made entirely from fours as Pakistan went into lunch on 177-3, matching their first innings score of 177, but with seven second-innings wickets in hand.

Shafiq was not out on 73 off 96 balls (10×4, 1×6) at the break, while Dale Steyn led the bowling stakes with two wickets for 49 runs off his 11 overs.
