Close shave: Kohli’s tight lbw

India’s shambolic top-order performance in Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final against New Zealand could have been substantially stronger, had captain Virat Kohli survived a veritable close shave.

Kohli was given out lbw, as India slipped to 24 for four in pursuit of a 240-run target at Old Trafford in Manchester. The talismanic right-hander reviewed umpire Richard Illingworth’s decision, but remained out after television replays revealed the impact and pitch of the ball to be in line.

The height of the bounce, though, was arguable. But left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult, approaching the right-handed Kohli from over the wicket, retained the dismissal. Kohli was visibly peeved by the decision.

Wednesday’s winner will meet England or Australia in Sunday’s final at Lord’s in London. The English and Aussies will contest the second semi-final at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Thursday.
