Former Proteas fast bowling superstar Dale Steyn has confirmed in a statement that he has officially retired from the game, calling it a “bitter-sweet” moment.
Steyn is undoubtedly one of the greatest fast bowlers ever produced by South Africa.
During his international career, the now 38-year-old racked up 439 dismissals at an average of 22.95. He also played 125 ODIs, taking 196 wickets at an average of 25.95.
In his T20I career, Steyn played 47 times for South Africa, finishing with 64 wickets at an economy of 6.94.
Steyn, who retired from Test cricket in 2019 with an eye on limited-overs formats, last played an international in February 2020 – a T20I against Australia – but has had constant run-ins with injuries over the past few years, especially after a career-threatening shoulder injury during South Africa’s tour of Australia in November 2016.
Although Steyn has continued to play in different tournaments around the world in the shorter format of the game, he officially confirmed on Tuesday that he was hanging up his boots.
