One-Day Cup wrap: Knights slay WP

The Free State Knights beat Western Province by 38 runs at Newlands on Friday.

The Free State Knights beat Western Province by 38 runs at Newlands on Friday.

Needing 305 to win, WP fell well short despite half-centuries from Yaseen Vallie (50 off 80 balls), Daniel Smith (59 off 60) and George Linde (55 off 46). Their innings ended with nine balls still remaining.

Alfred Mothoa (3-47) was the pick of the Knights bowlers.

Earlier, Free State posted 304-6 in their 50 overs with Matthew Kleinveldt (68 off 84 balls), Raynard van Tonder (54 off 78), Rilee Rossouw (48 off 31) and Patrick Kruger (53* off 34) all making important contributions.

Mihlali Mpongwana took 3-61 and Tshepo Moreki 2-66 with the ball for WP.

In Potchefstroom, the Boland Rocks beat North West Dragons by 27 runs.

Stiaan van Zyl (114* off 141 balls) and captain Pieter Malan (98 off 110) took Boland to 200-2 after 43 overs, but Malan’s run out triggered a collapse and they finished on 251-8. Most of the damage with the ball was done by Eldred Hawken, who finished with 6-46.

However, that total proved to be enough as the Dragons were bowled out for 224.

Wesley Marshall (73 off 87 balls) top-scored for the hosts, while Achille Cloete and Hardus Viljoen each picked up three wickets for the Rocks.

In East London, the Division 2 match between the Eastern Cape Iinyathi and Eastern Storm was abandoned without a ball bowled due to rain.
