CSA clears Swanepoel for county stint

Beyers Swanepoel can play for Worcestershire after being granted a no-objection certificate by CSA.

Beyers Swanepoel can play for Worcestershire after being granted a no-objection certificate by CSA.

The 26-year-old is already training with the English county and is expected to be available for their next fixture against Kent from 24 April.

The NOC was issued after Swanepoel’s contract with the Central Gauteng Lions was terminated, but CSA has confirmed that disciplinary proceedings against the player will continue following his controversial exit during the One-Day Cup final.

In a statement, CSA said it had received a “formal demand” for the immediate issuance of the NOC from Swanepoel’s legal representatives on 10 April.

“We remain mindful of athletes’ constitutional rights, including the right to choose a trade, occupation or profession freely, subject to lawful and reasonable regulation,” said CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki.

“At the same time, we are obliged to uphold our governance framework, contractual standards, and codes of conduct in the interests and reputation of the game.”

Swanepoel left the field with seven overs of the final between the Lions and Titans remaining to catch a flight to the UK, without informing teammates or management.

Having already completed his 10 overs – finishing with 3-44 – his departure forced the Lions to field just 10 players for the rest of the match, which they lost on the penultimate ball.

CSA has since charged Swanepoel with a Level 4 offence for bringing the game into disrepute. If found guilty, he could face a suspension ranging from five first-class matches to 10 one-day fixtures.
