Dean Elgar made an immediate impact for Essex in their opening County Championship match against Nottinghamshire.
The former Proteas captain hit the first ball he faced on Friday to the boundary, and went on to score 80 off 156 balls (12 fours) before being knocked over by South African pace bowler Dane Paterson.
