Maharaj smacks Root into history books

Keshav Maharaj’s late cameo prevented Joe Root from picking up a five-wicket haul and also sent the English captain into the wrong section of the history books.

The spinner put the part-time Root to the sword as he mixed up fine sweep play with some big-slog sweeps to move Root into the history books for most runs conceded in a Test innings.

Most runs off an over in Test cricket:

28 – Brian Lara (466444) off Robin Peterson (Johannesburg 2003-04)

28 – George Bailey (462466) off James Anderson (Perth 2013-14)

28 – Keshav Maharaj (444664b) off Joe Root (Port Elizabeth 2019-20)

27 – Shahid Afridi (666621) off Harbhajan Singh (Lahore 2005-06)
