Proteas team must represent SA – DEI chair

CSA's DEI committee chairperson Muditambi Ravele says transformation targets in South African cricket are still necessary.

CSA’s DEI committee chairperson Muditambi Ravele says transformation targets in South African cricket are still necessary.

CSA is holding a DEI (diversity, equality and inclusion) indaba in Pretoria this weekend that, according to the organisation, will “revisit the resolutions from the 2018 Transformation Indaba and assess the progress made by the cricket ecosystem over the past five years”.

Transformation became a big talking point again after only one black African was included in the Proteas squad for this year’s T20 World Cup, with six players of colour in total – the lowest number in a Proteas squad for an ICC event since 2016.

“When we talk about transformation, everyone thinks of black and white. But transformation is not black and white. It’s about inclusion, equality and diversity, but also about belonging,” Ravele told Rapport newspaper.

“We need to move past the point where targets are needed. But right now the targets are there because we’re not moving fast enough.

“We cannot host the World Cup [in 2027] with a team that does not represent South Africa.”
