Smith sparks pre-World Cup form

Steve Smith kick-started his World Cup preparations with an average of 202 in his three matches against a New Zealand XI in Brisbane.

The former Australia captain made his return to the Baggy Greens set-up after completing his one-year ball-tampering ban.

He batted at No 4 in his first match, at No 5 in his second match and No 3 in the final match of the three-match pre-tournament series that took place in Brisbane between Australia XI and New Zealand XI.

Smith impressed in the three games, scoring 22, 89 not out, and signing off the series with 91 not out. This saw him record an average of 202.

Former Australia vice-captain David Warner, who like Smith, was returning from a one-year ball-tampering ban, did not impress as much as his former skipper. He scored 39, nought and two in his three matches.

The official World Cup warm-up matches begin on 24 May, with Pakistan taking on Afghanistan, and  the Proteas clashing against Sri Lanka.
