Coetzee gets Proteas call-up

Knights fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been included in the Proteas squad for the three-Test tour of Australia.

In 13 first-class matches, the 22-year-old has taken 40 wickets at an average of 28.82 and a career-best 4-47.

No 3 batsman Keegan Petersen is unavailable for selection after sustaining a severe hamstring injury while playing for the Dolphins in the T20 Challenge final. That sees a recall for Theunis de Bruyn, who last featured for the national side in 2019. The Titans batsman has 12 Test caps and a first-class average of 41.83.

Batsman Rassie van der Dussen has recovered from a finger injury that cut short his England tour earlier in the year, while vice-captain Temba Bavuma also returns to the Test squad having missed the England tour with an elbow injury.

Aiden Markram has been dropped, while there is still no place for Janneman Malan, who averages 49.63 in first-class cricket.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen comes in for Ryan Rickelton, whose ankle injury has ruled him out of contention for the Proteas tour. Strangely, Rickelton is still able to play domestic cricket for the Lions.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj has been cleared for the Australian tour after sustaining a low-grade groin muscle injury at the T20 World Cup. He is currently undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.

The squad will depart for Australia on 1 December and play an unofficial four-day match against a Cricket Australia XI from 9-12 December at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.
