Rewind: Boucher hits fastest WC 50

Former Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher created his own bit of history during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies, when he broke the record for the fastest half-century at the showpiece event.

During the Proteas’ opening match against the Netherlands, Boucher joined the batting party by needing only 21 deliveries to reach his 50.

In a match that was reduced to 40 overs to an earlier rain delay, the Proteas posted a massive 353-5 before the Netherlands reached 132-9 in their innings, handing South Africa a 221-run victory.

Boucher would come close to breaking his own record at the World Cup only a few matches later when he notched up another half-century – but off 22 deliveries in the Proteas’ encounter with the West Indies.
